PLAN 597

Planning for Water Resources Management

Physical-Chemical-Biological Systems II: 23rd January 2008

Ecological Systems: Natural and Developed

Readings for second 1 1/2 hours today:

The Nature of Water ( Read section and follow links as appropriate to your level of understanding and interest. Don't read details on topics such as sediment bed load sampling and analysis unless you are really interested).

Water Quality (Read section and follow links as appropriate to your level of understanding and interest. Skim read case study of Powell River only if you have time after finishing other readings for today)

Water Pollution (Read section and follow links as appropriate to your level of understanding and interest. Note links to Ecosystem Initiatives don't lead anywhere useful).

Supplementary

Threats To Sources of Drinking Water and Aquatic Ecosystem Health in Canada

CCME Waste regulations development for municipalities (this will give you an example of how current approaches to establishing coordinated regularity regimes across Canada are being developed through the Canadian Council of Ministers of Environment.

EXERCISE: 15minutes in groups to identify source> conequence in ambient aquatic environment > impact on people for four groups of parameters: BOD-DO, Disease and Pathogens, Toxics, Nutrients

Discussion

  1. What are the groups of pollutants and parameters we use to measure them?
  2. How do we relate measures of pollutant discharge to measures of ambient water quality?
  3. How do we relate water quality conditions to water use?
