Physical-Chemical-Biological Systems II: 29th September 2011

Ecological Systems: Natural and Developed

Readings for second 1 1/2 hours today:

Water Quality (Read section and follow links as appropriate to your level of understanding and interest. Skim read case study of Powell River only if you have time after finishing other readings for today)

Water Pollution (Read section and follow links as appropriate to your level of understanding and interest. Don't read details on topics such as sediment bed load sampling and analysis unless you are really interested. Note links to Ecosystem Initiatives don't lead anywhere useful).

Aquatic Ecosystems (Read section and follow links as appropriate to your level of understanding and interest. When you get to the link to Ecosystem Initiatives focus on the Georgia Basin Ecosystem Initiative (GBEI) and look at others as you have interest and time).

Discussion

  1. What are the groups of pollutants and parameters we use to measure them?
  2. How do we relate measures of pollutant discharge to measures of ambient water quality?
  3. How do we relate water quality conditions to water use?
